Today at twilight with the sun behind the rainy clouds hanging low above the ocean and a solid waxing gibbous reflecting it, I made my way out to the enchanted hills of Laguna Beach.
In my backpack I had an offering to include in the cairn I was to build after I had gathered the proper amount of stones. The rain from earlier in the day had made the hillside very muddy and slippery. I was also constrained by time to do what I set out to do before total darkness engulfed the hills leaving me groping in the darkness for trails and confronted by the wild natural world at night.
With a couple of stones, a full jar, book, bag of flour, and steep muddy hills it took no time for my legs to burn and turn to batter going down the hillside. To save time I hoped over small wooden barricades and took shortcuts down the hill off the man made trampled path. I did recall a Faery spot from an earlier trip there. In fact it was the place they left the hollow white wand for me before. I knew I could never make it down there in time and back up before nightfall. I knew that I find a place where the veil to the unseen world was just as thin and attainable. This area being as enchanted as it already was, had plenty of areas where I could use a sorcererous sense to find another dwelling.
This could not be done through normal 5 sense aptitude. A sense unexplainable but deeply woven in my blood is what was to guide me into a realm I had never seen before on that mountainside. I realized I didn't have enough stones to build this offering and then entire trip down a good portion of the hill yielded no rocks whatsoever. But by the time I got across the husky grass and shrubbery in this new found clearing I saw several stones of perfect sizing. It was as if the area was made for this. The section where the ritual took place was also cleared out perfectly for me since it dropped about a foot down suddenly off the grassy knoll into a small clearing of soil guarded by thick shrubbery and boughs around three quarters of it. What happens next is for me to know only.
When the offering was done, I turned to make my way back up the hill only to notice a small brown and white hare quickly turning around and hopping up the hill. I thought where he went was also the way I came since time, space, and atmosphere appeared to not change before my eyes. But then again that is the problem with seeing with your eyes. When I got up to where the rabbit made his final hop before disappearing I looked down to find yet another white gift. This one was a very Fibonacci looking seashell which was odd being about 3 miles from the ocean and on a level far above the sea. I picked it up thinking maybe this is for me to present to remind them next time. I thought about the disdain they must have for the mundane human world and all of it's cruelty to the natural world through greed that knows no bounds. I soon looked around and realized by leaving the path to get to where I was and then following the rabbit, I was completely lost and the dusk had lowered a few shades of grey since I started.
Eventually I found my way back to the human path leaving the ghost roads behind. I looked up and identified an area of the adjacent mountain for the next time. Making my way up the hill was pure hell for a man in the kind of shape I'm in. My legs kept slipping on the muddy ground and I soon panted and sweat myself into a mild delirium. My ears stung, my lips were coated from breathing heavy, and my body was soaked in sweat. I finally made it to the top of the hill and stumbled back down the main pathway where I spotted something white that looked like feathers. Turns out it was a piece of man made tarp beneath the dirt but walking to it revealed two more rabbits who briskly hopped away. I decided to take my glasses off even though my vision was now askew do to a worsening case of Strabismus that appeared shortly after my spinal meningitis had reached my brain when I was ten years old.
Between the exhaustion, barely accessing Elphame, and my hindered vision that now split everything into two, I saw a small dark beast of some sort come running at me. I squinted to see what is was and why it was so fearless for it's size. Before it reached me it vanished. Next I watched small birds appear to just spring from the ground. Tons of them. All close to me. They would fly a small distance away when I walked toward them but all land perfectly on soil mounds that rose from the grass and camouflaged them. Lastly I heard the sounds of a moaning woman and first thought someone was just having a great time in one of the houses I was approaching up near the entrance of the hill path to the area of wildlife. Then I got worried and thought maybe someone had tumbled down the steep rocky cliff next to the house and that was their way of calling out. But as I got nearer the sounds stopped and I was now at the exit of the bioreserve. The time had come to fully immerse myself back into this matrix. In conclusion, as time goes on and the Cairn grows larger with my aid and the Land Wights are empowered to protect the land, I can only hope for a stronger spark of the great fire to keep me illuminated and shining in this dark world of man.
